UCSF Collaborative Learning Environment

The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management is pleased to announce the new UCSF Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE). Based on the Moodle learning management system, the new UCSF CLE will replace the WebCT system that has been in use at UCSF since 2000.

Why replace WebCT?

WebCT Discontinued -- The Library has been supporting WebCT Campus Edition 4.1 as the primary academic course management system for over eight years. Working closely with the schools, we have successfully used WebCT to support teaching and learning at UCSF. However, WebCT is approaching its end-of-life, and will need to be replaced within the next two years.

New Flexible Platform -- UCSF needs to move to a modern, more flexible system that can meet current and future needs for learner-centered environments, collaborative learning, and other collaborative activities. The selected platform -- Moodle -- is an open source environment that allows us the flexibility to customize it for the diverse and changing needs of the schools and the university. UCSF is in good company. Many colleges and universities, including SFSU and UCLA, have adopted Moodle for their online learning systems.

What does the new CLE have to offer?

The new Collaborative Learning Environment will provide enhanced versions of the core functionality relied upon by all the schools including:
  • Discussion forums and chat
  • Quiz/assessment/survey tools
  • Assignments
  • Gradebooks
  • Calendars
New features and tools include:
  • Integrated course wikis
  • Blogging and tagging tools
  • RSS feeds and podcast support
  • Customizable course formats, templates and themes
  • Robust roles and permissions
In the future, the CLE will support exciting new tools, such as electronic portfolios and learning object repositories. Because of the CLE's flexible architecture, we will also be able to offer it as a tool for non-course activities such as collaborative projects, committee work and research activities. A campus-wide CLE Advisory Committee is working to set directions for this exciting initiative.

When will the CLE be available?

The CLE (version 1) will be available for use in academic instruction beginning in the Fall 2008. Faculty will be able to begin developing new courses on the CLE starting in late August.

Do faculty have to start using the CLE right away? How long will WebCT be available?

The CIT is planning for a rather long transition period, so faculty are not required to use the CLE right away. Faculty may continue using WebCT for new courses for the Fall 2008. Beginning in January 2009, however, all new courses should use the new CLE. Only existing courses may continue to use WebCT. Begininning in the Fall 2008, CIT staff will be available to assist with migrating courses from WebCT to the new CLE. WebCT will be decommissioned in June 2010.

Each school is handling the transition differently, so faculty should consult with the CLE representative in their school.
  • Gwen Essex (Dentistry)
  • Chandler Mayfield (Medicine)
  • Chris Garrett (Nursing)
  • Frank Morales (Pharmacy)

What training opportunities will be available?

A wide variety! Check them out:
Introduction to the UCSF Collaborative Learning Environment: This new self-paced online course provides users with an overview of the CLE. It is available in the CLE Support Center. Log into the CLE at http://cle.ucsf.edu.
Building Your First CLE Course: In this two-hour, hands-on workshop, attendees will learn the basics of building courses on the CLE. After completing this workshop, participants will be able to interact with the different parts of the course's main page, build a basic course structure, add and organize content (PDFs, PowerPoint files, links to webpages, etc), and create and manage discussion forums. Sessions will be offered frequently. View the schedule and register here.
More Workshops: We are also offering advanced CLE workshops on quizzes, managing the gradebook, and using groups. More information is available here.
CIT staff can also attend your departmental meetings and conferences, or schedule individual consultations with faculty. We are also exploring ways to conduct virtual training using web conferencing systems. Please contact the CIT for more information.

I have an existing course on WebCT. Will assistance be available to transfer it to the CLE?

Absolutely! During the 2008-09 academic year, CIT staff will work closely with faculty and the schools in migrating their existing WebCT courses to the new CLE. CIT staff will migrate existing WebCT content to the CLE, and then work closely with instructors on fine-tuning their new courses on the CLE. The CIT is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for all faculty currently using WebCT.

How can I keep current on all CLE developments?
  • More information about training workshops, consultation scheduling, WebCT migration, and implementation planning, will be made available here.
  • Please contact the CIT if you have any questions, or call Brian Warling at (415) 502-6678.
