National Peer Review of Digital Learning Materials in the Health Sciences

Health science educators are increasingly compelled to incorporate technology into teaching, but the development of high quality, endurable digital learning materials is time consuming. Departments, schools and promotion and tenure review committees want to reward faculty for this effort but they are not in a position to evaluate the quality of these materials. A national peer-review process for digital learning materials in the health sciences is necessary in order for digital scholarship to be recognized. Kevin Souza describes a process that is being established nationally for peer review and the publishing source for these reviews, HEAL (Health Education Assets Library). Gail Persily describes national and local initiatives for collecting, publishing, and distributing digital learning materials, including HEAL, MERLOT, and related UC projects.

Kevin Souza is a founding member of the AAMC National Task Force on Digital Scholarship and discusses the development of a set of nationally vetted peer review criteria for digital teaching materials in the health sciences. Gail Persily is co-PI for an NLM grant to develop an institution-based database that interoperates with HEAL. The peer review and publishing process is described and copies of the criteria, along with other materials, are available at the links below. In addition, Kevin and Gail led a discussion of how publication and peer-review of these materials can be accepted by UCSF faculty review committees as scholarly contributions.
