Using Technology to Enhance Teaching and Learning
Thursday, July 18, 2002

On Thursday, July 18, 2002, over 100 UCSF faculty, staff, and students attended the Center for Instructional Technology's CIT Summer 2002 Event: Using Technology to Enhance Teaching and Learning.

Computers, technology, and the Internet have a great potential for changing the way faculty teach. On many campuses, including UCSF, this is already happening. At the CIT Summer 2002 Event, faculty learned more about how technology can enhance the teaching and learning experience for their students. Presentations given at the CIT Summer Event are now available as streaming Real Media files below. Topics include how computers, technology, and the Internet have already changed the way faculty teach at UCSF. You will need the free RealPlayer to view these presentations.

The UCSF School of Medicine has partnered with other medical schools (Colorado University, Tulane University) to create a series of computer cases utilizing a CD-ROM/web hybrid program with "virtual" Problem-Based Learning (PBL) groups. These cases simulate a real encounter by using computer-based digital video rather than text, forcing students to glean the needed information from the patient encounter.

Faculty First-hand Experience with WebCT

Three UCSF faculty members who taught with WebCT this past academic year share their experiences -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. They demonstrate their WebCT courses and discuss what worked well and what could have worked better. They also discuss how the communication tools in WebCT -- Discussion Forums and Chat -- worked for them and their students.
