The Instructional Grants Program awards grants to fund innovative projects to improve teaching and learning at UCSF. The program combines the Instructional Improvement Projects (IIP) grants and the Instructional Technology Development (ITD) grants to fund a wide range of projects in all aspects of education.

California Pharm-Assists for Tobacco Cessation: A Curriculum for Pharmacy Students
Robin L. Corelli, Pharm.D., Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, School of Pharmacy
A tobacco cessation counseling curriculum pilot-tested at UCSF will be incorporated into the core curriculum of all four California pharmacy schools. Drs. Robin Corelli, Karen Hudmon and Lisa Kroon hope this California-based program will become a standard of teaching for all future pharmacy students.

Web-based Instructional Course on Placement and Restoration of Dental Implants
Donald A Curtis, DMD, Professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry; Richard Smith, DDS, Clinical Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and Paul Johnson, DDS, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Growth and Development, School of Dentistry
Dr. Curtis plans to create a multidisciplinary web-based course that would include treatment planning, surgical placement, and restorative considerations with dental implants. Dental implants is a relatively new area of the curriculum and this web-based approach will enable the integration of materials from three departments for use by junior and senior dental students.

3-D Interactive Software for Teaching Cell Biology
Jesse Gray, Graduate Student, Department of Biochemistry
Mr. Gray will develop a 3-dimensional, interactive tool for teaching membranes and lipids in cell biology. By using an interface similar to a video game, Mr. Gray hopes to provide an integrated learning experience for all types of students.

Simulation Technology in Medical Student Education: Bridging the Basic and Clinical Sciences
Tin-Na Kan, 3rd year medical sudent and Manuel Pardo, Jr., MD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, School of Medicine
Ms. Kan and Dr. Pardo seek to provide a bridge between the basic sciences and clinical medicine by replacing paper patient cases into patient simulations using a MedSim patient simulator.

Instructional Technologies in Health Sciences Education (ITHSE)
Laleh S. Khonsari, PhD, Assistant Adjunct Professor, Dean's Office, School of Medicine
Dr. Khonsari is creating a series of web-based modules in the areas of instructional technology to prepare faculty for the increased use of technology in the UCSF curricula.

Development of Evaluation of New Curriculum to Enhance Subspecialty Outpatient Rotations in the Internal Medicine Residency
Kathryn Kocurek, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine
Dr. Kocurek has developed a set of written learning objectives to provide a framework for the subspecialty rotations in Medicine. Based around these objectives, this project will test a multidimensional learning intervention which includes pre- and post-rotation tests, Web- and CD-ROM-based self-directed learning modules, and weekly conferences.

Instructional Multimedia for Dental Gross Anatomy and Embryology
Michael McMaster, PhD, Assistant Adjunct Professor, Department of Stomatology, School of Dentistry
The overall goal of this project is to develop multimedia-based learning technologies to supplement the Gross Anatomy and Embryology courses in the first year Dental and Dental Hygiene curricula. This includes digitizing the course syllabus, developing an image database tailored to Dental Anatomy, and establishing a web site.

UCSF Medlinks: School of Medicine Instructional Links Web Site
Alvin Peter Mok, 2nd Year Medical Student, and Mintu Turakhia, 4th Year Medical Student
The goal of this project is to create a UCSF-based web site that serves as a comprehensive directory of all high-quality medical instructional web sites for use by UCSF students, house staff and faculty.

A Method for Teaching Medical Students a Contextual Approach to Patient Care
Jessica Muller, PhD, Assistant Professor; George Saba, Phd, Associate Clinical Professor; William Shore, MD, Professor; Department of Family & Community Medicine, School of Medicine
Utilizing a supervision model of instruction encompassing "live supervision" and "videotape review," this project proposes to redesign a behavioral and social science seminar for third year medical students in the core Family Medicine clerkship and to evaluate the effectiveness of the new course.

Multimedia Instruction of Cardiac Arrhythmia Mechanisms
Melvin M. Scheinman, MD, Professor, Electrophyiology Services, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine
This project plans to address the need for visualization of the complex dynamic processes of cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Scheinman will develop an interactive series on CD-ROM which will present classic examples to visually explain arrhythmia mechanisms and their associated electrocardiographic findings.

Development of a Comprehensive, Multi-disciplinary Course on Gerontology and Geriatrics
Margaret Wallhagen, PhD, RN, CS, GNP, Associate Professor, Department of Physiological Nursing, School of Nursing
Under the auspices of the Academic Geriatric Resource Program, a core group of faculty from the Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Medicine, and Social and Behavioral Sicence are involved in the development of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary web-based program in gerontology and geriatrics. The first of a series of case-based, interactive modules will cover the core base of knowledge in the physiology of aging.

Endondontic 3-D modeling Guided by Digital Video
Todd Wedeking, 2nd Year Dental Student
The goals of this multimedia project is to develop a web-based educational tool, for both the student and instructor, utilizing 3-D modeling of root canal systems and their treatments, synchronized to respective digital video.
