The Instructional Grants Program awards grants to fund innovative projects to improve teaching and learning at UCSF. The program combines the Instructional Improvement Projects (IIP) grants and the Instructional Technology Development (ITD) grants to fund a wide range of projects in all aspects of education.

Evidence-Based Psychiatry 2000: the Scientific Basis of Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment
Eric Glassgold, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Psychiatry, School of Medicine
Utilizing a case-based, problem-solving approach, Dr. Glassgold will redesign the seminars in psychopathology and psychopharmacology for third year medical students. This new course will engage students in active research in these fields as well as provide a standardized curriculum at multiple clerkship sites.

Medicine Core Clerkship Comprehensive Objectives Project (COP)

The Comprehensive Objectives Project (COP) is a multi-pronged intervention aimed at enhacing the impact of new learning objectives (LOs) developed for the Medicine 110 core clerkship. The interventions provide practical tools to facilitate the direct fulfillment of LOs by students and supervising residents and attendants.

Development of a Web-Based Neonatal and Pediatric Pharmacology Course
Monica Hubbard, RN, MS, PNP, Assistant Clinical Professor, Family Health Care Nursing, School of Nursing
The Neonatal and Pediatric Pharmacology Course (N232.04) will be reformulated from a lecture/reading format to a high quality web-based course which is easily accessible, cost effective, and does not require students to have highly specialized technology skills or equipment. The new course will be offered as an online course only to 30-40 students in spring quarter 2000.

An Internet-Based Multimedia Teaching Module for Intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)
Martin London, MD, Professor in Residence, Anesthesia, VAMC
Dr. London plans to develop a comprehensive teaching program and image library utilizing digital TEE images of the heart and related structures.

Integration of a Wireless Audience Response System, Computerized Rear-Projection Touch Screen White Board and Electronic Data Bases for Resident and Medical Student Pediatric Education
Bjorn Nilson, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Residency Program Director, UCSF-Fresno
By integrating the novel technology of an audience response system, a SmartBoard screen, CD-ROM and Internet, Dr. Nilson plans to develop weekly interactive review sessions for Pediatric residents and third year medical students.

Medical Education for the Future: Integrated Delivery Systems and the Medical School Curriculum
Charles Ruhlin, 1st Year Medical Student
Mr. Ruhlin will develop a series of case studies to provide students with a "virtual" experience of the decisions, actions, and consequences facing clinicans, administrators, and policymakers in different organizational settings. These case students will be integrated into the core clerkship experiences of third year medical students.

A Multifaceted Approach to Faculty Development for Community Preceptors
William Shore, MD, Professor, Family & Community Medicine; Jessica Muller, PhD, Assistant Professor, Family & Community Medicine; Cynthia Irvine, M.Ed., Administrative Driector, Foundations of Patient Care
Dr. Shore and his colleagues will design, implement, and evaluate a pilot faculty development program for community preceptors that will serve as a basis for programs for all community preceptors. The program will include an initial assessment of preceptors' needs for support, a full-day faculty development program and one-on-one consultation at the preceptor sites.

Development of a Curriculum in Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy with Children and Families using Problem Oriented Treatment Planning
Susan Smiga, MD, Director, Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services
Dr. Smiga will use this grant to provide a faculty development workshop for faculty in new techniques for brief and time-limited interventions that are increasingly required by managed care and other payors. Faculty will then be better able to teach residents these new models for treatment.

UCSF MedCareers: The School of Medicine Career Advising Web Site
Nicolas von dem Bussche, 3rd Year Medical Student
Mr. von dem Bussche will develop a website that is modeled on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) MedCareers program. It will offer assistance to students in career assessment, information gathering, goal clarification and implementation.

Basic Chest X-ray Interpretation CD-ROM
Claudia West, Associate Clinical Professor, Physiological Nursing
For the course Nursing 407 "Basic Chest X-Ray Interpretation", Dr. West will develop a self-paced program of study that allows students to access over 100 x-rays in digital format through a series of modules on basic pathologies including pulmonary edema, infections, etc.
