CIT Lab: Usage Guidelines

IMPORTANT NEWS:   On December 4, 2009, all CIT Lab services will cease as we prepare for the move to the temporary library computer lab space on the 5th floor. At that time, all CIT Lab door codes will be disabled and will no longer be needed. CIT services, including workstation access and equipment loans, will resume by January 12, 2010, on the 5th floor.

The CIT Lab is a multi-user environment. Please follow these simple guidelines, to protect your work and the work of others.

CIT Lab use is available for instructional multimedia content development

The CIT Lab Manager must first approve any non-instructional development work.

CIT Lab access is available primarily to UCSF individuals only

CIT Lab access is primarily available to UCSF faculty. UCSF staff and students who are working for faculty on instructional multimedia projects can also access the CIT Lab (see CIT Lab Door Codes for more information). Non-UCSF users may also be granted access with the permission of the CIT Lab Manager. Please note the following:

  • CIT Lab access codes are only provided to individuals 18 years and older.
  • While individuals younger than 18 years may be granted access to the CIT Lab (with the permission of the CIT Lab Manager), they generally should use the Lab during normal working hours (Monday-Friday, 9am - 6pm) while a CIT staff member is present if their faculty sponsor is not present.

NO FOOD OR DRINK

Food or beverages are never permitted in non-staff areas of the CIT Lab.

Please note - the following activities are strictly prohibited on all CIT Lab equipment
  • Producing MP3, WAV, or similar files (i.e., ripping) from copyrighted audio compact discs for non-instructional purposes
  • Reproducing copyrighted audio compact discs
  • Producing Video CDs or DVDs from copyrighted digital sources
  • Reproducing or creating pornographic materials

DO NOT install any unapproved software

Any unapproved software that is found on any CIT Lab Workstation will be removed. If you need something special installed, please contact the CIT Manager.

Back-up your work

The CIT Lab is not responsible for your data and cannot guarantee that your work will be available the next time you use the workstations. Back-up options include:

  • 1.4MB floppy (all PCs; floppy drive for the Macs is available upon request)
  • 100MB Zip disk (all Mac G4s)
  • 250MB Zip disk (all PCs; available on one Mac G4 and Mac G3)
  • 650MB CD-RW (all PCs; all Mac G4s)
-- users must supply own CDs
  • SmartMedia/Compact Flash - 4MB+ (available upon request)
-- users must supply own SmartMedia or Compact Flash cards
  • External hard drives -- all CIT Lab workstations have both USB and Firewire (IEEE 1394) ports. Users may bring their own USB or Firewire external hard drives to backup their data.
  • FTP the file to another machine

Report any software or hardware problems

If something is not working the way you expect it to, please contact a staff member or fill out a troubleshooting form (located near the door).

DO NOT change the hardware or software configurations
  • Disturbing a SCSI, USB or FireWire chain while a Mac or hard drive is turned on can cause damaged and/or lost data to both the Mac and the hard drive(s).
  • The software in the CIT Lab has been configured for optimum performance in this environment.

Please keep noise to a minimum in the CIT Lab

CIT Lab users should expect that a quiet and professional environment will be maintained as much as possible. In addition, the CIT and ILC staff members have their primary work areas inside or in close proximity the CIT Lab and therefore request that all Lab users keep the noise level to a minimum.
