Network-attached Storage Server

CIT Lab users now have access to gigabytes of secure storage space on Wiggum, the CIT Lab's new network-attached storage server. The availability of a very large amount of central storage space offers CIT Lab users a great deal more security and freedom than they used to have in saving their working files.
  • Back up your work to Wiggum. It's not completely safe to leave your CIT Lab working files on the workstation hard drives (that can be accessed by any other Lab user) without having backed them up someplace else. You should always back up your CIT Lab working files. You can now do so on Wiggum.

  • Multimedia files -- scanned images, video files -- are oftentimes very large and will not even fit onto a 250MB ZIP disk or even a CD-ROM. The Wiggum storage server provides gigabytes of space where you should be able to store even the largest multimedia files.

  • Access your working files from any CIT Lab workstation. By saving your files on the storage server (Wiggum), you will be able to access them from any PC or Macintosh in the CIT Lab. No more moving files around with ZIP disks or CDs. For example, you can scan slides using the PC with the slide scanner attached, save the files to Wiggum, then access them on a Macintosh later on when you want to insert them into a short video you're making.

  • Important files you don't want anyone else to access can now be stored securely on Wiggum in your own personal folder. You no longer have to keep your working files on the workstation's hard drive and hope that no one messes with them. And you can access them from any workstation in the CIT Lab.

  • You can back up your video projects. While you won't be able to capture digital video directly to the Wiggum storage server, you can use it to back up important video project files.
All registered CIT Lab users can have a personal folder established for them on Wiggum. Contact CIT Lab staff for more information.

Policies and Guidelines

By having a personal username and folder created on Wiggum, all users must agree to the following policies governing its use:
  1. Users must keep their personal username and password confidential and secure. Space on the Wiggum storage server is for individual use only. Sharing a username and password with anyone is strictly prohibited. Compromised usernames will be disabled immediately.
  2. Only files created for CIT Lab purposes can be stored on the Wiggum storage server. Personal files cannot be stored on the Wiggum storage server. In addition, the storing of the following types of files is strictly prohibited: Audio/Video files from copyrighted sources (e.g., MP3s, WAV, etc.); other copyrighted materials; pornographic media; executable program files.
  3. The CIT will not back up any files that have been saved on the Wiggum storage server to any other backup devices. The CIT assumes no responsibility for accidental erasures caused by users or Wiggum storage server failures.
  4. Files that are no longer needed should be removed from the Wiggum storage server. CIT Lab staff will monitor space usage, and may place quotas on disk space available to users in the future.
  5. While only an individual can (and should) access his or her folder on the Wiggum storage server, CIT Lab staff can access all folders on the server. CIT Lab staff will periodically access folders on the server to verify that these policies are being observed.
  6. Users must inform CIT Lab staff immediately if they suspect that their folders have been compromised, or if they no longer need them.
