New CIT Lab Hardware and Equipment

The CIT has recently upgraded and added equipment in the lab, and added a new camera for loan:

New Apu workstation: The Apu Macintosh workstation in the CIT Lab has been upgraded to a brand new Mac Pro with over 2.5TB of storage for digital audio and video projects; in addition, the previous monitor has been replaced with a 24" widescreen LCD. With a more powerful processor, additional RAM, and a tremendous amount of storage for user projects, Apu now joins the DiscoStu and Uter Mac workstations as powerful, fast computers for video editing and other projects. All files stored on the previous workstation have been migrated to the new computer.

Skype and videoconferencing: In the CIT Lab A/V production room, Skype has been installed on both the Mac and PC, and a Logitech QuickCam has been added to the PC workstation Smithers (the Mac workstation, Milhouse, has a built-in camera). The addition of Skype and camera capabilities to the workstation allows users to utilize the CIT Lab in a new way, and to collaborate and conference with colleagues throughout the world.

Flip Video camera: The Flip Video camera is a small camera that records up to one of hour of video to internal memory, and connects to a Mac or PC via USB–this expedites the process of editing video, by eliminating the real-time import step necessary for other cameras that record to miniDV cassette. Although the Flip Video camera does not produce as high of quality of media as other CIT equipment, it offers a new way to quickly record, capture, and edit video, for easy documentation and sharing of video recordings.

iPod/Belkin Tunetalk: The CIT now has an iPod Video and Belkin Tunetalk microphone available for loan. This equipment package is bundled with a wired lavalier microphone, and offers an easy way to record digital audio of an individual speaker, or a small group. These recordings can be easily converted to MP3s and distributed via Podcasts@UCSF.

Introducing Podcasts@UCSF

We are pleased to announce the availability of a new learning and communications tool at UCSF -- Podcasts@UCSF. The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management has developed Podcasts@UCSF to provide UCSF faculty with an easy way to deliver course multimedia, such as lecture recordings, to students. Campus departments and organizations can also use Podcasts@UCSF to deliver important content to the UCSF community and the general public.

Podcasting is a method for delivering audio or video content over the Internet. What makes podcasting so intriguing is the subscription element. Users can subscribe to podcasts, and have new content automatically downloaded to their computers as it becomes available. Programs such as iTunes makes this a very easy process. You can think of a podcast as an audiovisual version of a magazine subscription. You subscribe to the podcast and then when new episodes are added to it, the files will automatically download to your computer and/or portable MP3 player (e.g., iPod).
