CIT :: Placing Course Materials Online

Placing Course Materials Online

The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management, through its Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) and Public Services Department, now offers UCSF faculty more options in placing course materials online.

Online course options include . . .
  • WebCT
WebCT is an online course management system. Faculty at UCSF can use WebCT to develop online courses, either as supplements to in-class instruction or as courses that take place completely online. WebCT provides a secure online environment where only the instructor(s) and students are able to access the course. WebCT includes a comprehensive set of tools faculty and students can access from anywhere via the web:
    • Create online lectures (including PowerPoint presentations)
    • Incorporate communication tools (dedicated course email, discussion forums, real-time chat)
    • Online course calendars
    • Online quizzes, surveys, and assignments
    • Online gradebook management      and much more ...

See Developing WebCT Courses for more information on what goes into developing and managing WebCT courses at UCSF.

  • EReserves
Through EReserves (managed by the Library's Public Services Department), faculty can place course documents online. Students will be able to access course documents via the web. Course documents in EReserves can be just about anything -- articles, book chapters, old exams. Faculty can fax in the documents they would like to have included in their EReserves courses. With EReserves, it's easy to share documents between courses.
These services complement one another very well. It may make better sense to place some course materials within EReserves, while other online course functions and content are handled in WebCT. Each system can easily link to the other, so students will be able to seamlessly access course content regardless of which system the content may be in.
