Frequently Asked Questions
What is a podcast?
Podcasting is a method for delivering audio or video content. Users can subscribe to podcasts, and have new content automatically downloaded to their local computers as it becomes available. They can also download individual podcasts. Unlike streaming media, podcasts are downloaded and stored on the user's own computer.

You can think of a podcast as an audiovisual version of a magazine subscription. You subscribe to the podcast and then when new episodes are added to it, the files will automatically download to your computer and/or portable MP3 player (e.g., iPod).

For more information, read the Wikipedia podcasting article.

What hardware and software do I need?
Although the term is derived from the word iPod, podcasts do not require an iPod to be viewed or played. All you need is a computer connected to the Internet and the appropriate media player software, such as iTunes and QuickTime. You can listen to or view podcasts directly from the Podcasts@UCSF web site.

But what makes podcasting so intriguing is the ability to subscribe to podcasts. Once you discover a podcast here that you would like to subscribe to using iTunes, simply click on the iTunes 1-Click icon. You only need to do this once. Once you subscribe, you can now simply use iTunes (or any other podcast aggregator, or podcatcher). New episodes will download automatically when they become available.

Macintosh users should already have iTunes available on their Macs. PC users will need to download and install iTunes if this has not already been done. See the iTunes page for more information. If you wish to use a different application for accessing podcasts, many are available.

If you have an iPod or other MP3 player, you can download the podcast episodes to it for listening or viewing away from your computer.

Using Podcasts@UCSF
