Center for Instructional Technology Faculty Projects

UCSF faculty have used the CIT Lab for a variety of types of projects. Here is a list of some past projects.

Interoperative TEE: A Video Primer
Using the exceptionally high quality images of the heart and related structures acquired during interoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to develop a teaching environment aimed at anesthesia, surgical and cardiology housestaff. Dr. London has already compiled a large digital library of 2-dimensional and doppler TEE video which he plans to incorporate into this teaching environment. He is interested in collaborating with interested faculty, housestaff or students in developing interactive clinical cases and conferences in echocardiography.

faculty Martin J. London, M.D., Professor in Residence, Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, UCSF and Attending Anesthesiologist, VAMC, londonm@anesthesia.ucsf.edu

Morphology of the Tooth: Self-Guided Tutorial
Using Authorware to develop a guide to the morphology of the tooth. Five views of each tooth are displayed with descriptive text. The challenge of this project has been deciding how to capture the highest quality digital images of the individual teeth. Dr. Bird is achieving the best results by digitizing frames from video shot through a microscope.

faculty William F. Bird, D.D.S., Clinical Professor, Dental Public Health and Hygiene, School of Dentistry

Prosthodontic Instructional Website and Manual
Developing a physical and digital manual to guide students trhough their laboratory sessions in prosthetic dentistry. Students and faculty will both benefit from having this resource that will standardize the lab sessions taught by a variety of clinical faculty.

faculty Mark Dellinges, D.D.S., Associate Clinical Professor, Dept. of Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry

Critical Concepts and Appraisal of Research in Nursing: Web-based Course
A nursing course covering the critique and appraisal of research is being converted to a web-based course to be offered via distance learning. The conversion includes transcribing tapes of lectures to text form and editing for critical content, converting slides that accompany lectures to digital format, and adding course exercises and interactivity through communications tools.

faculty Virginia L. Carrieri-Kohlman, R.N., D.N.S., F.A.A.N., Professor, Dept. of Physiological Nursing, School of Nursing

Perspectives of Differences (PODS):
A Diversity and Cross-Culture Teaching Module for the Internet

Developing a web-based learning tool includes 4 perspectives for trainees to learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become culturally competent providers. The program is part of a larger curriculum to introduce diversity and cross-cultural training across the UCSF health professional schools.

faculty Melissa Welch, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor, Division of General and Internal Medicine, School of Medicine
faculty Hobart Harris, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor, Surgery, School of Medicine
faculty Michael Gallagher, Manager of Information Systems Development, Dept. of Medicine, mpg@medicine.ucsf.edu

MidasMovie 2.0: Instructive Visualization of Molecular Motion
Utilizing the MidasMovie tool, the project is to create an interactive web-based tutorial to help students understand molecular motion of biomolecules. Current work has focused on modifying and improving the MidasMovie so that students can easily use it on a Windows PC.

faculty David E. Konerding, Graduate Student, Graduate Group in Biophysics, School of Pharmacy, dek@cgl.ucsf.edu

Digital Histology Atlas
Creating digital atlas to support histology lab for dental and dental hygiene program. Students in these programs have limited time in the lab and this digital material will enable them to study histology specimens outside the lab.

faculty Randall Kramer, Ph.D., Professor, Oral Biology, Stomatology, School of Dentistry

Interactive Clinical Oral Health Research Modules
Developing a web-based, interactive graduate level course in the School of Dentistry on clinical research methods.

faculty Stuart A. Gansky, Ph.D., Assistant Adjunct Professor, Dental Public Health & Hygiene, sgansky@itsa.ucsf.edu

Practical Pathology of Chest Disease
Developed an illustrated CD-ROM text of pulmonary diseases for the non-pulmonary pathologist, pulmonologist, and chest radiologist. For more information, see Martha Warnock's home page.

faculty Martha L. Warnock, M.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Pathology

Integrating Basic Sciences and Clinical Perspectives:
An Interactive Learning Program using Case Studies

Using Stanford's Short Rounds program, creating an interactive learning program for core clerkship students that uses case studies to integrate basic sciences learned in the 1st and 2nd years with clinical perspectives.

faculty Pamela Martin, M.D., Associate Dean for Medical Student Education, Associate Professor in Psychiatry, School of Medicine

Guidelines for the Ordering of Ankle Radiographs - An Interactive Tutorial
Using Macromedia Authorware, created a tutorial on how to know when x-rays are advised for ankle and foot injuries.

faculty Douglas Yoshida, M.D., Emergency Medicine, NYU-Bellevue

Basic Wound and Laceration Care - An Interactive Tutorial
Using Macromedia Authorware, creating a tutorial to instruct students and junior house officers on the basics of wound management. Using text, sound, illustrations, photographs, animation, movices and interactive questions, the tutorial will systematically cover all aspects on the care of acute wounds. An interactive quiz will be included to judge and track the user's performance.

faculty Douglas Yoshida, M.D., Emergency Medicine, NYU-Bellevue

Data Animation: Interactive Graphing on a Web Page
Using interactive Web page animations to implement equations used in teaching physical chemistry and biopharmaceutics to Pharmacy students. Students will be able to test the behavior of an equation in real time and will see, instantly, the impact of altering its parameters.

faculty Christopher Cullander, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in Residence, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy
faculty David W.A. Bourne, PhD, Professor of Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics Department, College of Pharmacy, The University of Oklahoma - Health Sciences Center

Videotape on South Asian Women and Domestic Violence
Developed a videotape on the special issues around domestic violence for South Asian women. This videotape will be used to train residents about the cultural differences that relate to spousal abuse among South Asian women. All editing was completed using the MDL's video digitizing set-up.
