How to Log into WebCT

You need a GALEN Account to log into WebCT (see below for more information). All WebCT users log into all of their courses through a single page called myWebCT. All WebCT courses you are attached to are listed on your myWebCT page. Contact your instructor if a course you are supposed to be attached to is not listed on your myWebCT page.

How to Log In
On the CIT home page (http://cit.ucsf.edu/), click on "Log into WebCT," and enter your GALEN Account login name and password.
  • Students
    Since the Fall 2001, all new students have had their GALEN Accounts created for them. All new students should have received a letter from the Registrar with their GALEN Account information. The GALEN Account login name is the same as the SAA UserID, and the GALEN password is the same as the PIN.
    Note: Students who entered UCSF prior to the Fall 2001 were required to create their own GALEN Accounts. If they do not have a GALEN Account by now, students can go to the GALEN Accounts page and create their GALEN Accounts.

  • Faculty and Staff
    Faculty and staff need to create their own GALEN Accounts. If they do not have have a GALEN Account by now, faculty/staff can go to the GALEN Accounts page and create their GALEN Accounts.

  • Non-UCSF Individuals
    WebCT at UCSF is a service provided to current UCSF faculty, staff and students. Non-UCSF users cannot access courses on WebCT. Small numbers of exceptions can be made for the following reasons:
    • Non-UCSF individuals who are co-teaching WebCT courses with UCSF faculty;
    • Non-UCSF contractors who are designing UCSF WebCT courses for UCSF faculty o r approved departments;
    • Non-UCSF individuals who are evaluating UCSF WebCT courses.
    UCSF faculty and any other course designers who wish to have non-UCSF users access their WebCT courses should contact the CIT. CIT staff will provide detailed procedures.
I can't remember my GALEN login name and/or password
See the GALEN Account Help if you forget either your GALEN Account login name or password. Information on how to find out what your GALEN Account login name is, and/or how to have your GALEN password reset, is available there.

Security
The WebCT login process runs under a secure server. This means that when you enter your GALEN login name and password, this information is sent in an encrypted fashion. No one will be able to intercept your GALEN login information. When you access the login page, your web browser may pop-up a security alert indicating that you are being sent to a secure server. Whether you see this alert depends on how you have set up your browser. After you log in, you may see another pop-up alert informing you that you are now being sent to a non-secure server (again, whether you see this alert depends on how you have set up your browser). This is supposed to happen -- right after you log in, you are sent to your myWebCT page.

Logging Off
To log off of your WebCT session, simply click on the Logout link that appears at the top of your myWebCT page or any course page you are on.

Password Security
It is very important that you keep your GALEN password secret. Never give your GALEN password out to anyone. This is your account for accessing a variety of Library services, in addition to WebCT. If you give your GALEN password to others, they will be able to access your WebCT courses. Please note: It is the GALEN password you must keep secret. The GALEN login name is not designed to be secret and can be provided, for example, to your instructors so they can add you to their courses.

GALEN Account Renewal
The GALEN Accounts for students and public WebCT users need to be renewed on an annual basis (on October 1). Faculty and staff GALEN Accounts do not need to be renewed. Students and public WebCT users who attempt to log into WebCT with an expired GALEN will be directed to a special page to renew their GALEN Account.

GALEN Account holders whose Accounts are about to expire are sent an email in September alerting them that they need to renew their GALEN Accounts. It is very easy to renew a GALEN Account. If your GALEN Account has expired and you have not renewed it, you will need to do so before you can access WebCT.
