About Respondus

http://www.respondus.com

Quizzes can be created directly in WebCT (as covered in CIT WebCT Design Class 4: Quizzes, Surveys, and Assignments ), however, there is an alternative. Respondus is a software application for creating and managing exams and quizzes on your local computer that can then be printed to paper or published directly to WebCT.

You may wish to purchase your own copy of Respondus. Alternately, the CIT has licensed one copy of Respondus that you may use in the CIT Lab. You can even create a text file at your own computer and bring in into the CIT lab to import into Respondus; you'll just have to make sure to format it using Respondus' Standard Format.

Information on using Respondus to publish to UCSF's WebCT server is below, along with some important excerpts from Respondus' User Guide. More information can be found at http://www.respondus.com.

Publishing to WebCT with Respondus

If you are using your own copy of Respondus, make sure you are using the latest version (as of January 2008, the latest version is 3.5. More information about Respondus versions can be found at http://www.respondus.com/download/index.shtml).

You will also need your UCSF GALEN login name and password in order for Respondus to publish a quiz into your WebCT course.

Respondus At right is a screen shot of the WebCT Server Settings screen in Respondus 3.5. You can get to this screen by first selecting the "Preview and Publish" tab at the top, then the "Publish to WebCT" tab at the left, then the "Publish Wizard" button, and finally the "Edit Settings" button. Make sure that the settings match those in the image at the right.

Please note: On the "Edit Settings" screen, the User name is your GALEN Account login name, and the Password is your GALEN Account password.

Using the Respondus application for the first time:

If you are new to Respondus, there are several steps to creating and publishing a quiz:

Choose a Course Management System (CMS) Personality
Immediately after the Respondus software is activated, you are prompted to select a Course Management System (CMS) "personality." Respondus offers various user environments (called personalities) that parallel the features and terminology used by specific course management systems, such as Blackboard, eCollege and WebCT. You can change the "personality" at any time in Respondus from the Start menu. Change the CMS personality to WebCT.

Create a Respondus File
From the Start menu, select the Create button to create a new file. You are first prompted to enter a file name and a description for the file. Then you must indicate whether the file is an "Exam" or a "Survey." An exam file can be used to create a WebCT quiz or a self-test. The type of file you create (or open) will determine the features that are available throughout the program. Click [OK] when you are finished. Once a file is created, you are automatically switched to the Edit menu. This is where you add questions to the file.

Add Questions to your Respondus File
You can type in questions individually into Respondus, or you can batch import a set of questions that have been saved into a text file using Respondus' Standard Format. Detailed information on this format can be found in the Respondus User Guide, available at http://www.respondus.com.

Adjust Settings
Use the Settings menu to adjust various settings. Adjusting the Basic Settings controls the display of question titles, question delivery, quiz duration, and the number of attempts allowed. The Availability settings determine the window of time in which your students have access to take the quiz. The Results settings control how and when your students see their scores.

Preview and Publish to WebCT
Previewing your quiz allows you to view each question and its answers so that you can check for mistakes before you publish the quiz to WebCT. The Publish to WebCT screen allows you to upload your questions and your quiz to your WebCT course. You may need to go th through the "Publish Wizard" to make sure the settings match what is described in the section titled Publishing to WebCT with Respondus.

More information can be found at http://www.respondus.com.
